Expert Tips Turn Extracurriculars Into Standouts
Quick Smiles:
- Expert Kate Stone shares how students can elevate common activities during college admissions.
- Making an uncommon impact or lasting legacy can set applications apart.
- Mentorship is a new key factor in guiding young people toward meaningful pursuits.
The college application process can feel confusing and overwhelming, but college admissions expert Kate Stone wants to make it easier for students to shine.
Stone emphasizes that while many students participate in popular extracurriculars, the key is to approach them creatively and bring a personal touch.
“Anything that thousands of kids are doing is always going to be less helpful for you,” Stone explains.
She encourages students to do common activities in ways that stand out, such as leading initiatives or creating unique contributions.
Among her rankings, Stone gives high scores to achievements like solving real-world problems in the community, playing less common instruments like viola, and starting clubs with measurable impact.
“It doesn’t mean that you’re going to get into a top school because you’re playing the viola. It means that it’s just less common, and so it’s going to potentially help you.”
Stone reminds students to pursue activities they genuinely care about, as depth and lasting passion leave a stronger impression than just checking boxes.
“Are we trying to just check a box or put a resume line on your activities list? I hate to tell you, you’re going to be exposed for that.”
She highlights that colleges appreciate thoughtful commitment—demonstrating how experiences shape future goals is especially valuable.
Projects that create long-term positive change, such as community programs and sustainability efforts, stand out most to admissions teams.
Stone’s top advice for students is to connect with mentors who inspire them and provide unexpected guidance related to their dreams.
“The new extracurricular is having a mentor. If I could advise parents one thing, find your kid a mentor that you know will inspire them.”
Ultimately, Stone believes what matters most is the unique impact students make with their extracurriculars and the stories behind them.
