Fourth Graders Launch Mission to Protect Beloved Eagle Family — and Their Pure Hearts Are Saving the Day

Quick Smiles:
- Fourth graders in California launched a grassroots fundraiser to save endangered bald eagle habitat in Big Bear Valley
- The students became emotionally invested after watching Jackie and Shadow raise their chicks via classroom livestream
- Kids took initiative beyond the classroom, proving young hearts can drive real conservation wins
When science teacher Sara Stinson introduced her fourth-grade class to a livestream of nesting bald eagles in California’s Big Bear Valley, she had no idea she was about to spark a student-led conservation movement. But that’s exactly what happened when her young learners fell head over heels for Jackie and Shadow — two majestic bald eagles raising their chicks in the wild.
The students didn’t just watch passively. They became deeply connected to the eagles’ story, checking in daily on the growing family and learning about the delicate ecosystem sustaining them.
Then came heartbreaking news: the land surrounding Jackie and Shadow’s habitat was at risk. Without intervention, the wilderness these eagles called home could be lost forever.
Instead of feeling helpless, Stinson’s students decided to do something about it. They gave themselves extra homework — not studying for tests, but organizing fundraisers to help the local wildlife trust purchase and protect the threatened parcel of land.
These fourth graders weren’t content to simply learn about nature — they wanted to save it. Their initiative showcases the powerful bond between education and action, proving that even the youngest among us can make a tangible difference when they care deeply enough.
The students’ efforts represent more than just dollars raised. They embody a generation learning the value of stewardship, responsibility, and the importance of preserving God’s creation for future generations.
Big Bear Valley’s bald eagle population has become a symbol of conservation success, and now, thanks to a classroom of determined kids, that success story continues. Jackie and Shadow can raise their family in peace, watched over not just by livestream cameras, but by an army of young protectors who refuse to let their wild friends down.
This is what education should look like: inspiring young people to become engaged citizens who translate knowledge into meaningful action.
