Frank Turner’s musical journey began as a teenager discovering grassroots venues—places where he built friendships and a sense of community. Now a beloved performer with over 3,000 shows, Turner uses his platform to support the independent spaces that gave him his start.

He recalls how venues like The Joiners Arms and The Railway Inn welcomed him when he felt out of place, offering a chance to connect with fellow music lovers. Turner explains,

“I made friends and I felt less alienated. I found my people.”

London’s small venues taught him the art of connecting with crowds and inspired his trademark live energy. These experiences helped shape a compassionate community at his shows, but Turner warns these spaces face mounting challenges due to rising costs and closures.

He notes,

“Just existing as a small business in a city location is insanely costly before you’ve even sold a ticket.”

Championing solutions, Turner backed a voluntary donation from his tour tickets to support venues, echoing proposals from organizations like the Music Venue Trust. During lockdown, his weekly livestreams raised essential funds, helping 26 venues stay afloat when live music was silenced.

Reflecting on community value, Turner shares,

“People should know there’s a venue five minutes away where you can pay a tenner, see a band who’ll sweat on you, and then talk to them afterwards. That’s how you make friends. That’s how you find community.”

While he welcomes recognition of these challenges, Turner believes independent venues remain the backbone of the arts, fostering connection and new talent. His ongoing mission: to keep these musical homes thriving for generations to come.
