Londoners were in for a magical surprise when a colossal dragon, reminiscent of the one from the beloved Harry Potter films, made its way through the city streets. The 25-foot-long animatronic wonder, resembling the fierce Hungarian Horntail, roared past landmarks like Westminster Bridge and Big Ben, leaving onlookers in awe.
This theatrical spectacle was orchestrated to celebrate the opening of the ‘Triwizard Tournament–Making of Champions’ exhibit at a renowned studio tour just outside of London. The exhibit offers fans a chance to immerse themselves in iconic movie sets such as the Great Hall and Diagon Alley.
The Hungarian Horntail, weighing a substantial 1.3 tons, is a faithful recreation of the thrilling moment when Harry Potter faces off against the dragon in the ‘Triwizard Tournament.’ Designed by Joe Scott, a renowned filmmaker and animatronic designer, the creature moves with lifelike precision, complete with roaring sound effects.
“Revisiting the creation of the Hungarian Horntail 20 years on from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has been magical,” Scott shared.
The dragon’s journey through London was a nod to its daring escape in the film, appearing at various tourist spots before returning to the studio tour in Hertfordshire.
Crafted with meticulous detail, the dragon features a 3D printed fiberglass head and 119 hand-applied spikes. Its mouth, lined with 38 resin-printed teeth, captures the essence of the film’s fearsome creature.
Scott explained that creating the dragons for the Triwizard Tournament was a collaborative effort involving engineers, animatronics, designers, and special effects teams.
“It’s fantastic to see the craftsmanship that went into—inspiring visitors with the magic of our filmmaking secrets.”
The Triwizard Tournament exhibit, open from May 15 to September 8, invites fans to explore the behind-the-scenes magic of the iconic tournament. Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations and digital displays, revealing the secrets behind the magical challenges.
Among the highlights is a reenactment of the arrival of students from Beauxbaton and Durmstrang, complete with authentic costumes and choreography. Fans will also learn how filmmakers achieved the illusion of Harry holding his breath underwater during the second task.
The dragon’s journey through London and the exhibit itself are sure to delight Harry Potter enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the enchanting world of filmmaking magic.
