In McKinney, Texas, a cheerful purple stand is bringing people together one heartfelt conversation at a time. Volunteer grandmothers invite anyone passing by to sit down, share what’s on their minds, and leave feeling a little lighter.

This caring concept started when a reporter saw how much a weekly call with his 95-year-old grandmother helped a friend. Their bond sparked the idea of creating a “Grandma Stand” for anyone who needed a listening ear, using video chats and a welcoming sign on a Brooklyn street.

“I have no idea how many people she talked to through those years, but at least a thousand,” Mike Matthews shared about his grandmother, Eileen Wilkinson.

The tradition lives on, now with local volunteers like 71-year-old Nancy McClendon, who rotates shifts at the stand. “What’s the use of being old if you can’t share from your life experiences?” she reflected.

During her first shift, Nancy spoke with a father seeking parenting tips, a young woman worried about staying connected to her spouse, and a couple navigating fertility challenges. She found that simply listening helped people feel seen and heard.

Western society often leaves individuals feeling isolated, but the Grandma Stand is changing that by fostering real, face-to-face connections.

“We kind of know in our gut that we’ve lost a lot of connection, and true face-to-face connection,” said McClendon. “Which I think is what people find so refreshing about the novelty of sitting down in that setting.”
