Quick Smiles:

  • Lio Cundiff dove into Lake Michigan to save an infant blown into the water inside a stroller.
  • Pilot Luis Kapost tossed his jacket to help Cundiff stay afloat while holding the heavy stroller.
  • The baby was safely rescued unharmed, showcasing true everyday heroism.

In Chicago’s Belmont Harbor, 30-year-old Lio Cundiff heard a scream as fierce winds lifted a baby’s stroller into Lake Michigan.

Cundiff immediately jumped in to help the panicked nanny.

“I just realized that the lady wasn’t able to help because she was in too much panic, which is understandable. So I’m like, ‘I guess I’m going in,’ and I just jumped,” Cundiff told the Chicago Tribune.

“I had no idea what the plan was.”

He reached the stroller but couldn’t free the baby, so he lifted its top half above water to prevent sinking.

American Airlines pilot Luis Kapost arrived next and threw one arm of his Chicago Cubs jacket to Cundiff for support.

While Cundiff held one sleeve, Kapost gripped the other, keeping him steady until the nanny helped lift the stroller out.

First responders took Cundiff and the baby to the hospital for checks.

“Yeah, I called work, called my girlfriend. My aunt was on the phone. She heard the whole thing,” Cundiff shared with local news.

Despite fair weather, the cold water caused elevated heart enzymes in Cundiff, leading to an overnight hospital stay.

Kapost praised his fellow rescuer glowingly.

“That’s the epitome of a hero, someone who’s going to act, to help somebody else they don’t know even though they’re placing their own life in danger,” Kapost told the Tribune.

“He’s an absolute rock star.”
