Hospital on Wheels Brings Healthcare to Remote Rail Workers

From the railway hub of Bhusuwal in central India, innovation is on track to bring vital medical support to workers in need.

Ity Pandey, a veteran manager overseeing the bustling Bhusuwal Railway Division, recognized how difficult it was for employees and their families to reach healthcare services.

“I conceived the idea of a ‘hospital on wheels’ because we wanted to provide medical aid to our injured employees,” Pandey shared.

Many of the 25,000 rail workers live in isolated regions, far from hospitals, making timely treatment nearly impossible.

“The remoteness of these areas, coupled with the shortage of medical professionals, aggravated the problem.”

Pandey and her team converted an old first-class carriage into a full-fledged clinic named Rudra, complete with diagnostic tools, OBGYN facilities, and spaces for consultations and treatment.

The white train car, decorated with flowers, now travels across Maharashtra, bringing care directly to the heart of the railway community.

Each patient is given a unique ID, creating a medical record at Bhusuwal’s Divisional Railway Hospital for easy follow-up if necessary.

On its first day, Rudra provided healthcare to 259 beneficiaries, including employees, their families, and retired workers, focusing on chronic conditions like anemia and high blood sugar.

This inspiring approach ensures hardworking railway crews and their loved ones receive the attention they deserve—no matter how far from the city they live.
