Indian Nonprofit Transforms Hundreds of Waterways
Quick Smiles:
- EFI has restored over 600 water bodies across India.
- Creative landscape designs support wildlife and prevent stagnation.
- Traditional wisdom and modern methods work together for clean water.
An inspiring Indian environmentalist and editor is making waves by revitalizing hundreds of water sources across the country with innovative landscape engineering.
His nonprofit, the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), has cleaned and transformed more than 600 lakes, ponds, and reservoirs into thriving natural habitats or reliable resources for communities.
Their restorations often feature unique patterns formed from soil within reservoirs and ponds, which not only prevent stagnation but also offer safe nesting grounds for birds.
EFI’s dedication extends to both natural and man-made water sources, recognizing water as a sacred and vital element for people, wildlife, and agriculture across the subcontinent.
“Water and nature worship has been an integral part of our cultural evolution,” EFI’s founder, Arun Krishnamurthy, tells CNN.
“We understood that without water, there’s no life. For us, water is God, and water means energy, and thanking water is what most and all celebrations are about.”
EFI has restored nearly 75 water bodies in and around Chennai and works in 19 states, blending ancestral strategies with present-day techniques like shallow embankments for animal access and creative rainwater recharge systems.
Restored islands shaped like letters or constellations provide nesting habitats and enhance water flow, improving oxygenation and preventing stagnation.
Arun Krishnamurthy explains their approach draws from history:
“How was the embankment laid? Where was the palm tree planted? How was the canal cut? So taking lessons from the past, adapting it to the present-day challenges is what we are implementing.”
The restoration efforts include clearing thick weeds, desilting, and constructing double embankments, alongside planting native vegetation to create healthier, safer ecosystems.
One shining example is the restoration of the 76-acre Vandalur Lake near Chennai, where improved water control reduced local flooding and waterborne diseases, transforming it into a vibrant natural refuge.
EFI’s remarkable work continues to shape the future by honoring traditions and nurturing life-giving water sources across India.
If these uplifting transformations inspire you, share the story and let’s celebrate the hope and renewal flowing throughout India’s waterways!
