Injuries You Should Always Take Seriously
Quick Smiles:
- Minor injuries can quickly become serious if not monitored.
- Animal bites, puncture wounds, and head injuries need special attention.
- Signs of infection or slow healing should prompt a medical visit.
Home treatment is often enough for minor injuries, but doctors warn that some seemingly small issues can lead to bigger problems if not taken seriously. Emergency physicians say that many injuries may not appear dangerous at first, yet their complications can develop quickly.
If you are concerned or unsure about an injury, it’s always wise to speak to your doctor for advice.
Animal scratches and bites, even from a beloved pet, should never be overlooked.
“People often think small dog and cat bites or scratches are harmless, but even tiny breaks in the skin can get infected,” Dr. Brian Wiener explains.
Dogs and cats have bacteria that can cause serious infection, especially if the bite punctures the skin.
“When it’s a puncture (bite), this embeds the bacteria deep into the skin, so even if you clean it immediately there’s still a high risk of infection,” Dr. Eleni Horattas-Collins notes. Doctors may recommend antibiotics to prevent complications.
Infections from animal wounds can be very serious and even life-threatening. Cat scratches can cause cat scratch fever, and bites from wild animals are always emergencies due to rabies risk.
Puncture wounds, such as from stepping on sharp objects, may not bleed much but can damage underlying tissue and introduce bacteria deeply. There’s a danger of infection or foreign objects remaining inside the wound, potentially causing abscesses.
Dr. Horattas-Collins warns that puncture wounds from dirty objects or incomplete tetanus vaccinations should always be checked by a professional.
Head injuries, even if seemingly small, must not be ignored. Symptoms like headache, dizziness, and light sensitivity might not appear right away and could signal a concussion.
“These can develop slowly, over hours or days,” says Dr. Wiener. Anyone experiencing these signs should see a doctor, especially older adults or those on blood thinners. Loss of consciousness or confusion signals an emergency.
Injuries from minor car accidents can be masked by adrenaline, making it difficult to know if you’re hurt.
“Your fight-or-flight has been activated to get you feeling OK enough to run from the danger… but this can often mask symptoms and pain,” says Dr. Eric Cioè-Peña.
Brain injuries, whiplash, and abdominal issues might not be obvious right away, so getting checked out is a smart precaution after any accident.
Cuts and scrapes that don’t heal normally might signal trouble. Healthy wounds should scab within days and heal completely in one to two weeks.
“If a wound produces pus, a foul odor, or deepens instead of getting smaller, I would be concerned,” Dr. Wiener says. These may require medical attention to prevent further complications.
If you or someone you know experiences any of these warning signs, don’t ignore them—early care can lead to a happy, healthier outcome!
