Instagram Enhances Safety for Teen Users

Instagram is launching a refreshed Teen Accounts program to make the platform safer and more positive for young users. This update brings new protections inspired by PG-13 movie guidelines, offering parents greater peace of mind.

“What we’re announcing today is that we’ve revamped all of our guidelines about what teens can and cannot see on Instagram in a way that is guided by the PG-13 rating that was pioneered by the movie industry,” shared Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

The new system keeps teen accounts private by default, blocks sensitive search terms, restricts messaging, and uses parental controls — all now refined with a PG-13 approach. Teens will mostly see content appropriate for their age, unless parents specifically choose to adjust the settings.

“Parents don’t have to do anything,” Mosseri said. “So the way it works is by default, every teen that has a teen account will be in the 13-plus rating, which means that the content they see on Instagram will largely align with a PG-13 movie.”

If parents prefer, they can either broaden or limit their teen’s exposure to different types of content. This flexibility allows parents to customize their child’s online experience to suit their family’s values.

Instagram is also using artificial intelligence to detect mature content and identify users who might be misrepresenting their age, though Mosseri admits, “It’s gotten better, but it’s not perfect.”

To protect teens from workarounds to these policies, Instagram is always updating its systems to spot new code words or tricks. “People who want to circumvent our content policies, our rules, are going to try to come up with code words that try to get around our detection, which is why, for us, the work never ends,” Mosseri explained.

Some changes will appear gradually, helping ensure both teens and parents adjust smoothly. Teens will now have restricted access to accounts and content that is not age-appropriate, further strengthening the platform’s commitment to youth safety.
