Clyde, the Jack Russell, appeared to cunningly trick his owner into thinking he had no interest in her meal. But it was clear he wasn’t fooling anyone.

The affection dogs have for food is unarguable. A 2023 report in the renowned journal Animals reinforced this idea when researchers instructed 10 local pet dogs to select a favourite from six food items.

The experiment was repeated with another six food selection. The dogs were then subjected to increasingly challenging tasks. Interestingly, it was observed that when the reward was just a toy, the dogs abandoned the task early. However, they persisted when their preferred treat was the reward.

Clyde the Jack Russell is undoubtedly a food aficionado, or more specifically, an aficionado of his owner Laura Jones’s meals. The vibrant little pooch has been a vital part of Laura’s life for quite a while.

Laura reminisced about how Clyde came into her life. “Clyde was a puppy from my friend’s dogs,” she shared. “We’ve had a Jack Russell terrier before, and when she died at the age of 17, I instantly took the opportunity to adopt another one!”

Clyde’s entrance to Laura’s life turned out to be a joyful decision. The high-spirited dog quickly became an irreplaceable part of her life, brightening it with his endless energy and amiable nature. “Clyde loves his walks, chasing a ball, watching the world from the window, and barking at anyone who comes to the door! He’s got a lovely nature but is protective of his family,” Laura narrated.

Laura also talked about Clyde’s liking for rolling on freshly cut grass, an activity that occasionally turns his fur green. “Clyde is incredibly affectionate and I am his favourite person. He follows me everywhere,” she said.

Intriguingly, Clyde’s adoration for Laura extends to meal times. The cunning canine always situates himself near his owner during her meals.

Clearly, he hopes to snag any food that might mistakenly drop on the floor. Alternatively, he might be fantasising about Laura deciding to offer him any leftovers. To hide his intentions while waiting for the possible food reward, Clyde pretends to look elsewhere—a behaviour Laura recorded in a video she posted on her TikTok account, lolly.jones82.

“Clyde has always watched us while we’re eating, and it’s the first time I’ve managed to record it! It’s so funny!” Laura said. “Clyde knows he’s not supposed to do this because it’s human food, not his!”

Laura recognises Clyde’s intelligence, “Clyde is very clever and even howls like a wolf when asked!” However, Clyde’s smartness often lands him into funny predicaments. “One time, he ate a whole chocolate advent calendar that belonged to my daughter. He ripped open all 24 doors, ate the chocolate, and when I came home, he was in the corner looking guilty. We had to take him to the vet to get him checked, so that was an expensive calendar!”

Despite his amusing food habits and occasional naughtiness, Clyde is much cherished in the Jones household, apart from mealtimes perhaps.
