Veronika the Clever Cow Astonishes Scientists

Quick Smiles:
- A Swiss Brown cow named Veronika is the first cow ever recorded using tools.
- Researchers found she skillfully uses a broom or stick to scratch different body parts.
- The study broadens our understanding of animal intelligence in livestock species.
Veronika, a Swiss Brown cow in Austria, has captivated scientists by demonstrating remarkable intelligence. She uses brushes and sticks as tools to scratch herself, a behavior previously only observed in primates among non-human animals.
Raised as a companion by organic farmer Witgar Wiegele, Veronika’s unique habit was noticed over a decade ago and brought to the attention of researchers after being recorded on video.
Dr. Alice Auersperg led a study published in Current Biology, officially documenting tool use in a cow for the first time.
“The findings highlight how assumptions about livestock intelligence may reflect gaps in observation rather than genuine cognitive limits.”
The researchers conducted systematic trials, discovering that Veronika selected specific brush ends for different body regions and adjusted her techniques to suit her needs.
Dr. Antonio Osuna-Mascaró noted, “Veronika uses each part of the broom in a different way, and she applies different techniques depending on the function of the tool and the body region.”
She preferred the bristled end for firm areas like her back, and the smooth stick end for sensitive spots, showing both careful adaptability and advanced problem-solving.
The research team describes her actions as flexible, multi-purpose tool use, reserving certain methods for certain goals, which is rare in the animal kingdom.
“What is striking is how she compensates for these limitations, anticipating the outcome of her actions and adjusting her grip and movements accordingly.”
The scientists believe Veronika’s extended lifespan, stimulating environment, and human companionship fostered her “exploratory and innovative” behavior.
The team hopes to learn how environmental opportunities could reveal similar intelligence in other livestock, encouraging readers to share any sightings of tool-use in cattle.
This story is a joyful reminder of the hidden capabilities of animals around us, inspiring greater appreciation and wonder for our four-legged friends.
