Land Trust’s Rainforest Revival Surpasses Early Goals, Sparking Broader Restoration Dreams

A dedicated team of volunteers on the Isle of Man has successfully planted 30,000 trees to restore a rare ecosystem.
The project at Creg y Cowin exceeded its original goals by covering 100 acres with native greenery.
This new woodland forms part of a temperate rainforest, a lush habitat where plants grow atop one another in a vibrant display.
These rare environments provide vital homes for biodiversity while capturing carbon for a healthier planet.
“Temperate rainforests can be described as plants growing on plants, growing on plants,” said MWT chief executive Graham Makepeace-Warne.
While it will take several decades for the forest to reach full maturity, the immediate impact on the landscape is already visible.
Families who participated in the planting hope to return one day to walk beneath the towering canopy they helped create.
“To plant 30,000 trees in three years is incredible work, our volunteers should be really proud of that,” Makepeace-Warne noted.
The project eventually aims to welcome native livestock back to the land to encourage natural seed dispersal.
This holistic approach ensures the forest remains a self-sustaining haven for generations to come.
