Living With Purpose Linked to Brain Health Gains

Quick Smiles:

  • A strong sense of purpose in life lowers the risk of dementia, according to a new study from UC Davis.
  • This benefit appears across all racial and ethnic groups and persists even with genetic risks for Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Pursuing personal goals, relationships, and meaningful activities may help keep your mind resilient as you age.

Feeling that your life has purpose does more than just lift your spirits—it can also help protect your brain as you grow older.

Researchers tracked over 13,000 adults aged 45 and above for up to 15 years and found those with a greater sense of purpose were 28% less likely to develop cognitive impairment or dementia.

This protective effect was true even after accounting for factors like education, depression, and genetic risk.

“Our findings show that having a sense of purpose helps the brain stay resilient with age,” said Aliza Wingo, senior author at UC Davis.

Examples of life purpose included caring for loved ones, pursuing hobbies, participating in community or faith-based activities, and setting personal goals.

Notably, people with higher purpose experienced a modest—but meaningful—delay of cognitive decline compared to others.

“Purpose in life is free, safe and accessible. It’s something people can build through relationships, goals and meaningful activities,” said Nicholas C. Howard, first author of the study.

Participants answered survey questions about their well-being, which were scored and tracked alongside their cognitive health for years.

Thomas Wingo, a co-author, highlighted the potential for purpose-building to support healthy aging. “Purpose in life is something we can nurture,” he said. “It’s never too early — or too late — to start thinking about what gives your life meaning.”

Consider what makes your life meaningful, and share this uplifting news with loved ones to inspire healthy, happy living at any age!
