  • Scientists discover a low-energy method that fully recycles acrylic glass back into its original building blocks
  • The process promises affordable, high-quality reuse for everyday items like windows, car taillights, and protective barriers
  • Researchers are optimistic this breakthrough could dramatically reduce plastic waste around the world

Researchers at ETH Zurich have found a practical new method that breaks down acrylic glass—better known as Plexiglas—almost entirely into its original building blocks, making high-quality recycling realistic and affordable for the first time.

Acrylic glass shows up in everyday products like windows, car taillights, furniture and protective barriers.

Most of it has ended up in landfills or incinerators because previous recycling techniques were costly or produced lower-grade material.

“This new approach gives us a realistic path to circular use of acrylic glass,” the team noted.

By relying on a simple chemical process that requires little energy, the scientists can recover pure monomer that can be turned straight back into brand-new acrylic sheets and products.

Early tests show the recycled material performs just as well as the original, opening the door to large-scale adoption in manufacturing.
