Quick Smiles:

  • A couple survives a lightning strike together on a Wisconsin trail
  • The girlfriend restarts her partner’s heart twice after the strike
  • The man proposes marriage once they recover from the ordeal

Nick Broderick and his girlfriend Eva set out on a sunny August afternoon for a peaceful hike through Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Halfway up a ridge the sky darkened, and a single bolt of lightning struck them both, sending them tumbling to the ground.

“I remember a flash, then nothing, and then Eva’s voice calling my name,” Nick recalls of the moment he awoke to find her performing chest compressions on him.

Still dazed herself, Eva managed to restart his heart not once, but twice, until park rangers arrived and airlifted the pair to safety.

“She literally brought me back to life,” Nick says, “and right then I knew I wanted to spend whatever time I had left making her as happy as she makes me.”

Months later, once both had fully recovered, Nick surprised Eva with a ring during a gentle return hike on the same trail—this time beneath clear blue skies.

“I said yes before he even finished asking,” Eva laughs, “because after everything we’d been through, the answer was already written on our hearts.”

The couple now shares their story to remind others that even the most unexpected storms can lead to life’s brightest beginnings.
