After years of searching, the painting “Portrait of a Lady” by Vittore Ghislandi, looted by Nazis during World War II, was discovered hanging on a wall in an Argentine home thanks to a real estate listing photo.

The Dutch investigative team’s find prompted local authorities to act, leading to several coordinated police raids across Mar del Plata.

This masterpiece once belonged to Jacques Goudstikker, a Dutch art dealer who began recovering his stolen collection in the 1990s, with his daughter Marei von Saher now continuing his legacy.

Descendants of former Nazi official Friedrich Kadgien, who brought the artwork to Argentina decades ago, were found to possess the painting—their home had attempted to hide it just before police arrived.

Authorities secured multiple historical works during raids, while Kadgien’s descendants were placed under house arrest until the artwork was safely delivered to officials.

“It is encouraging that the painting is now with the authorities and that it is no longer missing. I am relieved that it’s now in a safe and secure place,” shared Marei von Saher.

With countless pieces still missing from a vast trove of treasures lost during the war, each successful recovery offers renewed hope to families seeking justice.
