Quick Smiles:

  • Luna remains the most popular cat name for 2025.
  • Book-inspired names like Violet and Onyx surge in popularity.
  • Cats can recognize their own names and their owners’ voices.

Luna has once again claimed the top spot as the most popular cat name, holding its position for a second year in a row. TrustedHousesitters analyzed data from 100,000 registered pets to unveil this year’s favorite names among cat owners.

Charlie rose to second place, climbing the ranks after just missing the Top 5 last year. Other favorites include Lucy, Bella, and Leo, with classics like Pepper and Shadow also making the list alongside unique, human-inspired choices.

According to the ASPCA, pet naming trends have evolved with societal changes, shifting from looks-based names to those inspired by personality, pop culture, and even food. The influence of literary communities like BookTok is especially strong, with names from popular series driving significant surges—Violet rose by 318 percent and Onyx by 320 percent, inspired by Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing.

Fantasy names such as Feyre, Azriel, and Rowan, taken from Sarah J. Maas’s beloved books, became increasingly popular for pets this year. As pet parents look for meaningful monikers, the connection between owner and feline grows even more special.

Research shows that cats truly recognize their own names and can distinguish them from those of other household pets. “Cats often respond by turning their head or orienting themselves toward their owner when called,” experts say. Even so, a cat’s famously independent nature means don’t be discouraged if they choose not to come every time.

If you’re wondering whether your feline friend knows their name, watch for their reaction to your voice—they’re listening, even if they sometimes play it cool!
