  • An endangered takahē chick hatched to parents previously thought infertile.
  • This rare event brings fresh optimism for the species’ recovery in New Zealand.
  • Zealandia sanctuary celebrates the safe arrival and promising future of the chick.

A breeding pair of endangered takahē birds in New Zealand surprised conservationists by successfully rearing a chick, a joyous turn after being considered infertile. With only around 500 of these unique, flightless birds left in the country, the new chick is incredibly precious for the species’ future.

The remarkable occurrence happened in Zealandia, a protected ecosanctuary near Wellington, after the female bird Waitaa disappeared from regular feeding spots. High-pitched calls led the team to discover she and her partner Bendigo, once thought unable to breed, had welcomed a chick.

“I’m thrilled that Zealandia can support national takahē recovery efforts not only by providing opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people to connect with this amazing species, but to also add more birds to the national population.”

The takahē is a colorful, ground-dwelling bird once believed extinct until its rediscovery in 1948, and each successful breeding brings renewed hope. The new chick will eventually be named and moved to a new home, but for now, it thrives safely under the sanctuary’s care.

Sanctuary officials expressed their delight, stating,

“For now, we are delighted that Zealandia is its safe playground.”

Stories like these highlight the dedication of conservationists and the resilience of endangered wildlife. Celebrate this happy milestone by sharing the uplifting news with friends and family!
