Quick Smiles:

  • A Parisian meteorologist leaves a €10 million fortune to a Normandy town he never visited.
  • The town plans to use the funds for community projects like a bowling green and a soccer pitch.
  • The generous act helps clear a significant municipal debt of €400K.

In a delightful twist of fate, the tiny town of Thiberville in Normandy has become the unexpected beneficiary of a €10 million fortune from a man who shared its name but never set foot there.

Roger Thiberville, a meteorologist and heir to a wine business fortune, chose to leave his wealth to this humble town of 1,800 residents.

Nestled quietly in the Normandy landscape, Thiberville boasts a charming 19th-century chateau but is otherwise unremarkable in terms of tourist attractions.

The local mayor, Guy Paris, expressed his astonishment at the generous endowment, describing it as “beyond imagination.”

He noted that the funds would first be used to eliminate the town’s €400K debt before investing in community projects.

“It’s an exceptional sum of money,” said Mayor Paris, who has served the town for 28 years.

“Obviously the amount is beyond imagination. We don’t yet know what we will do with it.”

The mayor emphasized that they would not squander the inheritance, stating, “We’re going to manage this dowry as we have always done with our municipal budget—with prudence and responsibility.”

Roger Thiberville’s fortune initially belonged to his parents and was meant for his sister, who passed away without heirs, thus transferring the wealth to him.

Upon his own passing, he left no heirs and only requested that his ashes and a plaque be placed in the town cemetery.

The town is considering several projects to benefit from this unexpected windfall, including a park with PV solar panels and additional recreational spaces for the local primary school.

This act of blind generosity serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways kindness can touch a community.
