Mom Creates Inclusive Playground Honoring Daughter

Out of heartbreak, Jeanette Reynolds built a legacy of happiness for her community’s children in Sterling Ranch.

She was inspired by her daughter Madison, who faced significant challenges due to lissencephaly, a rare genetic condition.

Reynolds recalls,

“She was severely disabled… but when we found a wheelchair-accessible park, you could just see it on her face.”

Madison’s spirit motivated Reynolds to create the Miles 4 Madison nonprofit, raising funds and community support to realize her vision.

The new playground is filled with features designed for kids with special needs, such as slides for cochlear implants, an in-ground trampoline, and cozy spaces for sensory breaks.

Shannon Starkey, who brings her son Asher frequently, cherishes the thoughtful design of the park.

Lynn Moffett, a Parks Advisory Board member, stated,

“Seeing how many families use it — it was overwhelming. Now we’re committed to creating inclusive parks throughout the county.”

Sterling Ranch is now planning an accessible pool and more amenities with help from Douglas County, building on over $6 million already invested.

Every evening, Reynolds is touched as children of all abilities come together. The ongoing legacy reminds her of her daughter’s joy and inclusion.

“It honestly makes me cry sometimes,” she said. “For me, it means everything to know that my daughter would have been included.”
