New Gel Regrows Tooth Enamel Naturally
Quick Smiles:
- Scientists developed a protein-based gel that repairs tooth enamel.
- The gel promotes regrowth of natural enamel without fluoride.
- Lab tests show the new enamel acts just like healthy teeth.
Researchers in England have introduced an innovative gel that repairs and renews tooth enamel, signaling a hopeful advance in dental care.
This new treatment mimics natural protein processes to guide healthy enamel growth, without the use of fluoride.
Working alongside international colleagues, scientists from the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy addressed the widespread issue of enamel loss, which contributes to half of all dental problems globally.
Tooth enamel loss links to more than cavities—it also connects with serious health conditions like diabetes and heart disease due to bacterial build-up.
The experimental gel forms a sturdy layer on teeth, filling in holes and cracks. Acting as a scaffold, it encourages new mineral to grow by drawing calcium and phosphate from saliva in a method known as epitaxial mineralization.
This approach restores not just the surface but also the structure and strength of natural enamel.
The gel can even generate an enamel-like layer on exposed dentine, helping with tooth sensitivity and improving dental restoration outcomes.
“We have tested the mechanical properties of these regenerated tissues under conditions simulating ‘real-life situations’ such as tooth brushing, chewing, and exposure to acidic foods, and found that the regenerated enamel behaves just like healthy enamel,”
Dr. Abshar Hasan, a postdoctoral fellow and leading author, shared in a university announcement.
Enamel doesn’t naturally grow back, and today’s treatments only relieve symptoms rather than replace the lost layer.
“Dental enamel has a unique structure, which gives enamel its remarkable properties that protect our teeth throughout life against physical, chemical, and thermal insults,”
added Dr. Hasan. “When our material is applied to demineralized or eroded enamel, or exposed dentine, the material promotes the growth of crystals in an integrated and organized manner, recovering the architecture of our natural healthy enamel.”
Exciting advances in dental science continue, including recent news of drugs that spurred tooth regrowth in animal studies and the discovery of unique stem cells in wisdom teeth.
This latest gel offers hope that people may one day restore their smiles naturally, transforming the future of dental health.
If you’re inspired by this promising dental discovery, share the good news and help others look forward to brighter, healthier smiles!
