Quick Smiles:

  • Fourteen-year-old Alex Smith immediately sprang into action when he saw a child fall through a frozen pond in Springfield Park, NYC.
  • Alex used a safety ladder to help keep the boy afloat until firefighters arrived.
  • Both the child and probationary firefighter Shaun McMahon, who also broke through the ice during the rescue, were brought safely back to shore.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Smith became an instant hero after witnessing a child slip through the ice at Springfield Park and rushing to his rescue. Without hesitation, Alex grabbed a safety ladder and slid it toward the struggling boy, helping him stay above the icy water.

“I was like ‘oh my God, oh my God, I need to go help him,’” Smith said.

Firefighters arrived quickly after being alerted by other children, with firefighter Shaun McMahon entering the water to assist—even after the ice broke under him.

“About halfway out onto the ice, the ice gave way, and I went into the water,” McMahon said.

Despite the freezing conditions, the responders and Alex worked together, ensuring the child was safely pulled from the pond and warmed in an ambulance.

Smith’s quick actions bought crucial time for rescue teams and saved the boy’s life.

“They told me if I hadn’t done what I did, he wouldn’t have been able to stay afloat and he would have drowned,” he said.
