At a Publix in Acworth, Georgia, customers often seek out Michael Masterangelo’s register, even if it means waiting much longer.

Michael’s mother, Dayna Peshel, shared.

“They will come here specifically just to get in his line… It means everything. I am so proud of him.”

Michael has an intellectual disability and has worked at the store for a decade, making each interaction uplifting for every shopper.

Michael said.

“I like ringing people up and seeing people every day! I’m just so happy to be here, every day to work.”

Many shoppers say that seeing Michael’s smile is the highlight of their visit.

One customer commented.

“As soon as I walk in the door, I look for him. And if he’s here, it just changes everything.”

Store Manager Courtney McGuinness explained.

“His positivity that he comes in every day with, it makes working and shopping here enjoyable. He’s always smiling.”

“He’s always interacting.”

Michael has also been part of Special Olympics since childhood, and this year, he set an ambitious fundraising goal while working at his register.

Michael said.

“I can’t believe I did $31,603 by myself, at my register! My personal goal is crazy!”

“And I did that in 6 days!”

His efforts raised more than $31,000 in less than a week, inspiring even more community support.

Shoppers often go beyond shopping to cheer Michael on at his basketball games.

Michael shared.

“They make me so happy and cheer me on and stuff! Next coming weekend, they’re coming to watch me play basketball!”

Michael’s mom feels deep gratitude for the love and acceptance shown to her son.

Peshel said.

“It makes me feel amazing. I feel like I raised him right, and he is just a light to everyone… I don’t worry about him.”

“I know he is going to be okay. Because he has so much love with family, friends, and community.”

Michael sums up his experience by reflecting on the kindness and support he feels every day.

“It feels like I am so special, helping people and others. And I love this whole community, and everyone loves and supports me!”
