Reese Witherspoon is celebrating a new milestone—her first novel, co-written with bestselling author Harlan Coben. The book, “Gone Before Goodbye,” unveils the story of Maggie McCabe, a former army combat surgeon, who is drawn into an intricate world of high-stakes intrigue.

The collaboration blossomed after Witherspoon approached Coben to help bring her idea to life, a journey that involved daily creative exchanges.

“It’s just an incredibly disciplined talent where they have to really make stuff up out of thin air,” Witherspoon says.

Coben enjoyed his first-ever coauthoring experience, describing Witherspoon as a “generous collaborator” and “one of the great storytellers out there.” Their teamwork resulted in a story that tied together every detail perfectly, with Witherspoon even suggesting the plot’s final twist.

“I understood a lot as an actor about building character, but he builds entire worlds and a cast of characters that all have to intertwine to come out with this perfect result. And he managed to tie up every loose end, which I didn’t think was possible,” Witherspoon shares.

Coben reflected on the book’s ending, crediting Witherspoon’s input for a pivotal change: “But actually she was right. I went to bed that night, I woke up the next morning, said, ‘You’re right.’ So we made a little change in the end.”

Both authors remain open to future collaborations—Witherspoon revealed she would write another book only if Coben joined her on the journey.
