Jimmy Cliff, the iconic musician celebrated for expanding reggae’s reach across the globe, has passed away at age 81. His wife, Latifa Chambers, shared that he died following a seizure and pneumonia.

“I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists, and coworkers who have shared his journey with him,” said Latifa Chambers.

Born in Jamaica in 1944, Cliff achieved fame early with his record “Hurricane Hattie” at just 14. He went on to earn two Grammy awards and seven nominations throughout his impactful career.

Cliff starred in and created the soundtrack for the 1972 film “The Harder They Come,” helping reggae become a global phenomenon. He collaborated with legendary artists like the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon, while stars such as Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson covered his songs.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, joining only one other Jamaican, Bob Marley. Bob Dylan once praised Cliff’s powerful songwriting, declaring “Vietnam” the “greatest protest song ever written.”

Cliff experienced a resurgence in 2012 with his Grammy-winning album “Rebirth.”

“Now, I feel I have not completed what I’m here on this planet to do. I have to say what I have to say and do what I have to do via music and films. Every morning I wake up, that keeps me going,” Cliff once reflected.
