The scimitar-horned oryx, once hunted to extinction in the wild, now roams free again in the Sahara thanks to decades of collaborative conservation.

Through partnerships between zoos, private wildlife reserves, ranchers, and determined visionaries, the oryx population has grown from zero to around 600 wild animals, with many more thriving in managed herds.

At Marwell Hall in England, a studbook carefully monitors genetic diversity, tracking over 3,000 animals across zoos worldwide.

This careful recordkeeping and breeding coordination helped prevent inbreeding and maintained a healthy gene pool essential for the success of reintroduction efforts.

“The first phase of the operation has been a success. We’ve got the animals back into the wild, they’re breeding, they are pretty secure,” John Newby shared regarding the return to the Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve in Chad.

With wild herds now also established in Tunisia and Morocco, as well as a robust Texas population, the oryx’s revival stands as a testament to perseverance and hope.

Phil Robbins from Marwell described the “Wow” moment when workers released these amazing creatures into their ancestral home, a sight both thrilling and deeply rewarding for everyone involved.
