Snowmobilers’ Heroic Rescue of a Snowbound Young Moose Will Warm Your Heart This Winter

Quick Smiles:
- Snowmobilers spot young moose buried neck-deep in snow.
- Friends dig her free in just 20 minutes.
- Exhausted doe walks away healthy and calm.
A group of snowmobilers in New Hampshire discovered a young moose doe trapped up to her neck in 4-to-5-foot-deep drifts while heading home for lunch.
With no cell service to call authorities, Mike Dion and his friends sprang into action, approaching cautiously to find the exhausted but calm animal struggling for freedom.
“Everyone looks at their cellphone, no service,”
Dion said.
“We couldn’t call Fish and Game, because that was our first thought.”
“Well, if we don’t do nothing,”
Dion remembers thinking.
“the moose probably isn’t going to survive.”
On hands and knees, they dug for about 20 minutes until freeing her.
“Eventually, we got her up and got her going, and she seemed to be all in good health,”
Dion said.
“I think she was happy. She wasn’t aggressive or too nasty with us. That’s what we were worried about at first.”
The kind group stayed nearby for 10 minutes to ensure she was steady before heading home.
