Startup Turns Ship Emissions Into Limestone
Quick Smiles:
- London startup Seabound developed a quicklime-powered system capturing 78% of ships’ carbon emissions.
- Their technology transforms exhaust fumes into harmless limestone that can be stored or sold.
- Other innovators are exploring wind-assisted ships and electric ferries to cut emissions further.
Global shipping accounts for 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, outpacing aviation as a polluter. A new system using containers of quicklime may offer a practical way to address the sector’s environmental impact.
Seabound’s simple device funnels ship exhaust through calcium oxide pebbles, which chemically transform dangerous emissions into solid limestone.
This innovation was proven in a three-week ocean trial, capturing most carbon and up to 90% of sulphur fumes.
The system fits neatly into shipping containers, making it easy to swap on and off cargo decks at port.
One challenge ahead is securing a sustainable quicklime supply, as traditional production methods release their own emissions.
While some argue carbon capture is not a replacement for moving away from fossil fuels, others say it’s essential for meeting climate goals.
Momentum is growing as other companies test modern sails and large electric ferries to further reduce emissions on the water.
Innovative minds across the industry are charting new routes toward a cleaner, brighter future for shipping.
