Tatami Craft Thrives Thanks to Global Appreciation

Artisans in Japan are finding new life for their centuries-old craft as international admirers from Europe, the US, and the Middle East embrace traditional tatami mats.

Foreign demand now makes up a significant part of orders for workshops like that of Mr. Fumio Kuboki, whose family has been crafting tatami for 280 years.

Although Japanese homes once relied on tatami flooring, changing lifestyles and overseas mass production led to a decline in local demand. However, about half of Mr. Kuboki’s overseas orders now come from the United States.

Professor Arno Suzuki from Kyoto Tachibana University observed that foreign enthusiasm for tatami has helped younger Japanese appreciate the mats’ appeal again.

He noted that people now enjoy having a “tatami space” at home, especially as it provides a safer area for toddlers and babies.

In Kobe, Taro Mano, the fourth-generation owner of a 70-year-old tatami business, also sees a growing diversity of customers from around the world.

“Tatami is a kind of symbol of Japan. It’s an easy way to express a Japanese atmosphere, even in other countries.”

Mr. Mano shared.

Innovation is keeping the tradition fresh, as products like tatami coasters and book covers appear alongside classic mats.

Mr. Kuboki believes the future of tatami lies in meeting customers’ desires.

“Every day I talk with visitors and listen to what kind of tatami they want. The products that are selected and loved by people are the ones that will naturally become the future of tatami.”

“The future of tatami will be decided by customers,”

he explained.
