Quick Smiles:

  • Eye redness led Kelly Mann to discover her breast cancer early.
  • She powered through intense treatment and now supports others online.
  • Her story reminds us to listen to our bodies and prioritize self-care.

Kelly Mann, a university professor and mother of three from Abilene, Texas, noticed redness in both eyes that seemed like persistent pink eye, but the real cause was far more significant. After multiple cycles of eye issues, she discovered a lump in her arm, leading to a breast cancer diagnosis just before her 36th birthday.

“I was, obviously, devastated,” she recalls.

The tumor grew rapidly, prompting an aggressive treatment plan involving chemotherapy and targeted therapies. Her eye trouble returned after her first chemo session and was finally identified as episcleritis—an inflammation sometimes associated with cancer.

“Episcleritis was my first real, tangible symptom that I had,” Mann says.

Through twelve rounds of chemo and surgery, Mann faced challenging side effects but relied on resilience and her children’s support to keep going. She now manages menopause symptoms as part of her ongoing prevention efforts and continues to experience episcleritis on occasion.

“It’s OK to stop and take a minute or a week if you need it, to just rest and recharge and take the space that you need in order to keep going,” Mann explains.

Her experience inspired her to share her journey online, where she connects with others navigating young-onset cancer. Mann feels grateful to be a resource for women facing similar challenges and hopes her openness will help others feel less alone.
