During a winter storm in Seagoville, Texas, Douglas Lane noticed a car stopped on the road and decided to stop and help. He soon heard someone shouting for help from the icy drainage culvert below.

Without hesitation, Lane moved quickly and grabbed onto a man who had fallen into the freezing water, holding on tightly to keep him above the surface. Lane even called 911 while doing everything he could to prevent the man from slipping under.

“He gave up fighting to stay above the water. I said ‘no, you’re not going to do that.’”

Officers soon arrived and created a human chain to pull the man out, rushing him to the hospital where he is now recovering. Police credited Lane’s fast actions for making the difference in saving a life.

Despite being hailed as a hero, Lane says that helping others is simply the right thing to do.

“I wasn’t trying to get any kind of extra credit,” Lane said. “I’m just doing what I know best—and that’s helping others.”

We hope this inspiring act of kindness helps you see the good that surrounds us every day. If you enjoyed this story, share it with someone who needs a smile!
