When Alanna, a New Jersey resident, first laid eyes on a lonely shelter cat labeled “unadoptable,” her heart went out to him instantly. Surrounded by more active felines, Crusty sat quietly in his cage, looking “sad, defeated, and with these haunting black eyes,” she recalled. “He looked like he’d completely given up. I knew I couldn’t leave him there.”

Crusty, now about 9 years old, had been at the shelter due to his age and chronic health problems, including Feline Herpesvirus (FHV), which brought challenges like sneezing, nasal issues, and loss of appetite. The shelter, uncertain about his adoptability, intended for him to stay. But Alanna wouldn’t accept that. “I showed up almost every day to advocate for him until they agreed to let me take him home.”

Once Alanna brought Crusty home, hope began to blossom. “From night one. He curled up and slept right on my chest, and that’s been his spot ever since,” she said with a smile. “He’s a total Velcro cat—happiest when he’s in my lap or taking long baths, which is extra special considering he wasn’t even bathing when I met him.”

“There’s this deep bond that formed the moment he let his guard down—like he knew he was safe,” Alanna said. For Crusty, life at home means cuddling, relaxing, and enjoying the simple joys of daily living.

Their journey together has resonated with thousands online. After Alanna shared a video of Crusty’s story on TikTok, the post received more than 400,000 views and an outpouring of supportive messages. “I’m so glad he gets to be loved forever,” wrote one viewer, while another added, “Thank you for adopting him and giving him a soft landing.”

Alanna shared, “I shared his story to encourage people to adopt senior and special-needs animals. There’s a deep kind of magic in watching a soul come back to life. I hope it inspires someone to take a chance on a cat like Crusty.”

Looking ahead, Alanna is excited for the adventures still to come. She plans to take Crusty and his feline siblings on a cross-country road trip this winter to escape the cold. “He’s earned his soft life, and now he’s seeing the country—cuddled up in the backseat, of course,” she said.
