Patty Friedman and her neighbors in Midlothian, Virginia organized a parade for UPS Driver Anthony Gaskins to show him their appreciation.  Friedman said, “Even though his truck does not have sirens and his uniform does not offer added fire protection, Anthony Gaskins is considered a hero in the Hallsley neighborhood.

What made Gaskins a hero was that in the midst of the COVID, he continued to work, deliver a record number of packages, and made people feel welcome.  With the extra work that the pandemic has brought, Gaskins took it in stride and even managed to have a friendly word with his clients.

It mattered to Friedman that in her first weeks in the new neighborhood, her positive interactions with Gaskins made the move and the pandemic bearable. It turned out that she was not alone in thinking that Gaskins deserved a special recognition.

To honor his hard work and positivity, the whole neighborhood decided to throw him a parade!

Hundreds of people and more than 75 cars lined the streets and lay in wait as Gaskin’s brown truck rounded the corner.

Friedman explained, “A humble man, he needed to be coaxed, but eventually, slowly drove his truck down the road while children and adults held up signs, screamed his name, honked their horns, and rang bells.”

Even Gaskins’ supervisors were there and presented him with a gift for his service.  This moved Gaskins to tears as he was not expecting the kindness that he was being shown.

And being the dedicated worker that he is, he got back on his truck and continued delivering the parcels after acknowledging the parade in his honor.  The mark of an everyday hero.
