Village Unites to Save Beloved Red Phone Booth

Quick Smiles:
- A village united to save their iconic red phone booth.
- Community spirit led to a successful call drive to meet the required call quota.
- The phone booth remains a vital resource due to poor mobile reception in the area.
In the quaint village of Sharrington, Norfolk, an unexpected notice shook the community. Their beloved red phone box was at risk of being removed due to insufficient usage.
This iconic symbol, deeply embedded in the village’s identity, faced potential disappearance unless action was taken.
Determined to preserve this emblematic structure, the residents rallied together. They launched a call drive to meet the necessary 52 calls that would convince the telecommunications company to keep the phone box operational.
Local MP Steffan Aquarone emphasized the power of community action, stating,
“It just goes to show you that communities can achieve incredible things when we stand together to protect what matters to us.”
The phone box, often referred to as a “lifeline,” has been crucial in emergencies. Last year, it served as a vital communication point for emergency services when mobile reception failed.
On March 15th, the community braved the chilly morning to ensure enough calls were made. Their efforts paid off, as the telecommunications company confirmed the phone box would remain, recognizing its importance due to the area’s poor mobile signal.
“This decision was made due to the poor mobile phone signal in the area and the significant number of calls made from the payphone, highlighting its importance to the community,” a company spokesperson stated.
Local resident Derek Harris expressed his pride in the community’s unity,
“It means everything to me to know that the phone box will still be here long after I’m gone.”
This delightful outcome is a testament to what can be achieved when a community stands together for a shared cause.
BT guidelines say a minimum of 53 calls need to be made from a phone box to keep it in use, but the one in Sharrington has now had more than 146
