American scientists found that the total number of steps, regardless of how they are distributed through the week, plays an important role in improving health outcomes. The study observed 13,547 women with an average age of 71.8 years, tracking their activity for one week and their health for a decade.

Those who managed 4,000 steps on one or two days weekly saw a 26% lower risk of death and 27% reduction in cardiovascular disease compared to those who did not reach the milestone at all. If they met 4,000 steps three or more days in a week, their mortality risk dropped by 40%.

“Because of today’s low step counts, it’s increasingly important to determine the minimum amount of physical activity required to improve health outcomes, so that we can offer realistic and feasible goals for the public.”
