In North Yorkshire, England, the Yorkshire Spoon Club is giving new life to fallen city trees through the craft of woodworking. Hobbyists and professionals meet monthly in Ellekers Wood to carve steins, bowls, and spoons from timber that would otherwise be discarded.

After a recent storm brought down an alder tree in Shipley, club member Clive Nutton collected the logs for the group’s creative projects.

“It was very happily received and it’s in the process now of being turned into all kinds of lovely things,” he shared. “They’re reflective of a good time spent in the woods with lovely people and reflective of time in nature.”

Founder Dave Watson explained how the club helps members without easy access to harvesting equipment, noting that tree surgeons are often happy to contribute wood rather than see it wasted.

Watson highlighted the craft’s positive impact on mental health, as members find peace and joy carving together outdoors.
