Nikolai has always loved carrying things around in his mouth since he was a puppy. Whether it’s one of his toys or something his mother requires, it makes him feel safe and useful, and it’s also cute.

Nikolai’s mother, Allie Rudman, told The Dodo that when Nikolai was approximately 10 weeks old, he began bringing her objects that he recognized his mother wanted or needed to leave with, such as her shoes and car keys.

When Nikolai goes for his daily stroll, he now has to carry something with him. It could be something that any dog would carry, such as a plush animal, or it could be something entirely unexpected and humorous.

 Rudman said it’s different most of the time.

“He took my fry backpack the other day, and today he took a box of Cheerios. The box was empty and I had set it next to the trash to take out later, and he decided that’s his friend for the walk.”

Rudman had recently returned from Target with a large haul of items, including a loaf of bread. When she asked Nikolai whether he wanted to go for a stroll, he became enthralled and dashed into the kitchen, carrying the loaf of bread with him.

“[He] was standing by the door, so I let him take it,” Rudman shared. “I assume he wanted to bring it because it’s his favorite treat! He did indeed carry it for the entire walk and didn’t even drop it to go potty — I was laughing the entire way.”

Nikolai has been known to bring some amusing items on his walks, but this one tops the cake. Everyone who saw him trotting around with the bread swinging from his jaws couldn’t help but smile, and he certainly made the neighborhood happy that day.

“A group of little kids playing outside saw him walking with the bread and all pointed and laughed at him and thought it was the greatest thing,” said Rudman.

Nikolai has gone on walks with little bagels, rice cakes, and other baked goodies since then, so it appears he’s settled on a theme.

Nikolai’s family enjoys seeing how much joy he offers to everyone around him, and it’s always a wonderful surprise what Nikolai will bring on his walks.
