  • Chris and Janae Martinez endured years of infertility before their dream of parenthood came true.
  • A Safe Haven Baby Box at the Belen Fire Department helped connect the couple with baby Mikey.
  • The family worked through legal challenges before finalizing the adoption after a year of waiting.

Firefighter Chris Martinez and his wife Janae struggled with infertility for years before a life-changing miracle occurred at his own station. When the Belen Fire Department in New Mexico installed a Safe Haven Baby Box, Chris jokingly hoped to adopt the first infant surrendered.

That lighthearted wish became a reality when a baby boy was left in the box, leading Chris to feel an immediate connection. Despite the infant facing health challenges and a long hospital stay, the couple remained dedicated to becoming his parents.

The journey was difficult as the couple navigated the legal system to secure Mikey’s birth certificate and social security card. They refused to give up, insisting that the young boy deserved a permanent identity and a loving home.

I knew from the moment I saw him I wanted to be his dad, Chris said.

We thank the mother so much for making the bravest decision, Janae said. She wanted a better life for Mikey.

The family now looks forward to a bright future together, grateful for the brave decision made by Mikey’s birth mother. This beautiful union proves that hope can be found in the most unexpected places.
