Quick Smiles:
- A viral video of a shih tzu named Rufus sparked a wave of adoption interest.
- Rufus, now named Bino, found a loving home with two dads and a shih tzu sibling.
- The story highlights the power of social media in changing a rescue dog’s life.
A recent video featuring a shih tzu’s expressive face at an adoption event has touched the hearts of many, leading to a life-changing outcome for the furry friend.
Rufus, a two-year-old shih tzu, arrived as a stray at the Carson Animal Shelter in California. Volunteer Jan Vega felt an immediate connection, captivated by his yearning for companionship.
“While I was there one Sunday, I saw him in his kennel and he seemed so desperate for some human interaction so I took him out to the play yard,” she shared.
Vega’s Instagram posts caught the attention of Love at First Mutt Rescue, who expressed interest in rescuing Rufus if a foster could be found. Vega, already experienced with fostering, decided to take him in, making Rufus her fourth foster dog.
Hoping to find Rufus a forever home, Vega dressed him in a stylish green sweater and bandanna for an adoption event three weeks into fostering. Despite his charming attire, Rufus was not chosen that day.
In a TikTok video posted on October 19, Rufus can be seen gazing around with hopeful eyes. The video quickly went viral, amassing over 580,600 views, 120,800 likes, and 1,025 comments, with many expressing disbelief that Rufus wasn’t adopted.
“That’s INSANE! I would choose this super cute little Shih Tzu in an instant. Ohh lovey,” one viewer exclaimed.
Another noted, “AND he’s wearing his best fit but didn’t get chosen.”
A more optimistic comment read: “As far as he knows he was just at a fun event, I hope he finds a home soon.”
The viral video led to an overwhelming response, with the Carson Animal Shelter receiving numerous adoption applications.
“The rescue was overwhelmed with the amount of applications they received for him,” Vega explained. “I got over 50 messages inquiring about him too. It was so awesome to see how a quick TikTok video was literally about to change this little dog’s life.”
After sorting through applications, a meet and greet was arranged with Rufus’s new family. Now named Bino, he lives happily with his two dads and a shih tzu sibling.
“Bino is so happy and adjusted really quickly in his new home,” Vega reported. “I wish this was the reality of all rescue dogs. Shelters are full, rescues are full. We need more people to start adopting and fostering! Fostering is free and so much fun…We’re just so happy and thankful that he got his happy ending.”
