Today marks 125 years since the birth of the Federation of Australia, when the Constitution united Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia under one federal government. The movement for federation was inspired by similar unions in the US and Canada. States maintained their own legislatures but wanted a united federal system to manage national issues, with Sir Henry Parkes playing a pivotal role as the “Father of Federation.”

Sir Edmund Barton, a key figure in drafting the constitution, became the first prime minister before joining the High Court of Australia. His commitment helped lay the foundations for Australia’s democracy.
