The Missouri community is reflecting on the meaningful life of longtime sports journalist Ben Arnet, who passed away at 43. He served as sports director at KOMU, earning admiration for guiding and mentoring the next generation of journalists.
Ben Arnet’s enthusiasm for his profession and unwavering support for students left a positive mark on everyone he worked with.
“This is not easy news to report,” said KOMU news anchor Taylor Freeman.
His thoughtful leadership not only elevated sports coverage but also fostered teamwork and excellence among his colleagues. KOMU General Manager Matt Garrett highlighted Ben’s collaborative spirit, saying, “I firmly believe that what we do best, we do together, and Ben embraced that philosophy in his work.”
David Kurpius, dean of the Missouri School of Journalism, celebrated Arnet’s dedication, describing him as “a veteran sportscaster, a dedicated mentor and a consummate colleague.”
The outpouring of gratitude and memories from Columbia and the broader sports community is a testament to Ben Arnet’s lasting impact.
He will be fondly remembered as a father, valued colleague, and cherished friend.
