Crows leave thank-you gifts for kind neighbor [Video]

  • Crows have been known to remember people who have shown kindness to them, so they can return the favor.
  • One woman started feeding her neighbor crows and even built a perch for them.
  • The grateful crows left her a variety of gifts, such as metal scraps, acorns, and coins.

Tango Steinke had just moved into her Virginia townhouse when she learned that she had some noisy neighbors: a couple of crows.

The crow couple, whom she called Doc and Dottie, had laid claim to the surrounding area. Their nest was just behind her home.

So she tried to make the best of the situation by befriending them.

Whenever they came near, Tango would throw peanuts their way. She said that she had already been feeding the squirrels and other birds anyway, so she might as well feed the crows, too.

At first, Doc and Dottie were hesitant to approach. They would only help themselves to the food when Tango went inside.

But as their visits grew regular during the winter, they became more comfortable in expressing their arrival.

“They’d caw at my bedroom window on the weekends until I got up to feed them,” Tango shared.

When Tango noticed that the pair would sometimes bring their friends, she built them a little perch on her balcony.

The crows were grateful for all the food, especially since food was scarce during the chilly season.

So they expressed their gratitude through gifts. The first thing that Tango noticed was a worn, grey pebble.

She shared, “I had gone out to feed, and when I saw it, ran for my camera because I wanted to share it with everyone. Since then, they’ve left varied gifts: a button, acorns, bits of metal, a beat-up marble, pottery scraps, and soda tabs.”

One time, she happened upon some coins on the crows’ perch.

Tango also celebrated a recent addition to Doc and Dottie’s family. A baby crow joined them for feeding time last spring!

Tango is more than happy that she has become friends with her neighbors.
