  • Stuart Dahlquist has been paying close attention to the crow family living near his backyard.
  • One day, he rescued a couple of baby crows, returned them to their nest, and gave them food.
  • The crows decided to thank him with some homemade gifts that were truly unique.

When a crow family moved near Stuart Dahlquist’s backyard, he delighted in watching them and listening to their baby birds chirping.

One day six years ago, he heard the worried squawks from the crow family and spotted two chicks on the ground.

Stuart quickly scooped up the chicks and returned them to their nest. He then left out some food and water at the base of the tree, in case the chicks fall down again.

He also decided to throw bird food into his front yard, and it became a regular routine.

It turns out that the crow family acknowledged his acts of kindness and decided to show their gratitude.

Stuart was preparing bird food one day when he spotted a fir sprig decorated with a soda can tab — in the exact spot where he fed the crows.

The homeowner said he noticed them instantly since he was sensitive about trash. “But the pull tab being threaded onto the sprig of fir wasn’t normal and I hung onto it,” he added.

He was then surprised to spot another soda tab-decorated branch the next day.

Stuart shared some photos on Twitter and wrote, “This isn’t only generous, it’s creative, it’s art. My mind is blown.”

The story reached behavioral ecologist Jennifer Campbell-Smith, who earned her Ph.D. studying crows at Binghamton University. She said, “I am very skeptical of random internet sources, but knowing these birds and how intelligent they are, I wouldn’t be shocked. It’s still an amazing example of the way crows are really watching us and are mindful of us.”

Stuart has since continued his close relations with the crow family, and said that he might even get a tattoo to commemorate their friendship.

He shared, “They’ll follow along when I take my walks, landing on the wires along the way. The adult male … is very amiable and will fly sometimes within a few feet, swooping by to say, ‘Here I am!’”
