Deaf Puppy Who Got Passed Over Finds Forever Home with Deaf Man [Video]

• Emerson, a young black Lab mix, has been passed over for adoption because he was deaf and sickly.
• When the rescue shared his story, it caught the attention of Nick, who was also deaf.
• Nick knew he and Emerson was meant to be, and now the two can communicate with each other well using hand signals.

Little Emerson has been sickly since he was born. The black Lab mix was deaf, fighting parvo, and suffering from seizures.

Because he was sickly, he kept getting passed over for adoption while all his siblings quickly got adopted.

When Emerson became 12 weeks old, North Florida Rescue of Maine decided to help him out by sharing his story. They wrote, “Our Sweet boy Emerson is still looking for his forever home.”

“He wants everyone to know that even though he may be deaf, he is still an AMAZING little pup with SOO much love to give! All he wants in the whole wide world is to be someone’s companion,” they added. “He is not an overly needy pup, he is content snuggling on the couch with you, or finding the perfect sunny spot on the floor to relax in.

They added that Emerson is already learning hand signals for communication.

This post caught the attention of Nick Abbott from Maine, who was also deaf. He was not looking to adopt because he already had a 7-year-old yellow Lab. But he was so touched by Emerson’s story that he decided to just visit him at the shelter.

But as soon as they met, Nick knew that he just had to take the little one home.

Nick recalled, “He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there. So you can tell he kind of picked me.”

Emerson quickly settled in and learned the hand signals that Nick taught him. Nick uses sign language, such as signing the letter “s” for sit, and Emerson gets rewarded with treats.

Now, Emerson knows how to sit, lie down, and spin! Nick and Emerson can easily communicate with each other.

Nick shared, “The bond that we have is awesome. We understand each other very well. I’d like to think it was meant to be. He’s special.”

Emerson has been passed over for a long time. But the wait was well worth it because he found his perfect match in Nick.
