  • A deaf therapy dog named Cole naps during his workday at a New Jersey school.
  • The video of Cole snoozing has charmed millions on social media.
  • Cole’s deafness is an asset in the bustling school environment.

In a delightful twist of events, a therapy dog from Millville, New Jersey, has captured the hearts of internet users by doing what many of us secretly wish we could do—fall asleep at work.

The charming footage, shared on TikTok by user @deafcole, showcases Cole, a pit bull born completely deaf, peacefully napping on a bean bag amidst the lively environment of an elementary school.

“Deaf therapy dog caught sleeping on the job in elementary school music class. Being born deaf is an advantage for this gig. 100 percent unbothered,” reads the video caption.

Chris Hannah, Cole’s owner and an elementary school music teacher, shared that Cole has been a dedicated school therapy dog for six years.

“In this clip, Cole is zonked out on his giant bean bag in the middle of the music room while students are doing their daily music lessons. He so often falls asleep in the funniest positions in the middle of class,” Hannah explained.

Hannah added, “Being deaf is certainly an advantage when working in the noisiest room in the building. As the students always say, Cole can’t hear with his ears, but he listens with his heart.”

Deafness in dogs, much like in humans, can be either congenital or acquired, and varies from dog to dog. Cole is among those canines who are completely deaf.

In some cases, dogs may only be partially deaf or may lose hearing as they age.

Dr. Liza Cahn noted that symptoms of canine deafness include a lack of response to sounds, lack of ear movement, increased vocalization, and difficulty waking up.

Other indicators might include trouble learning new commands or unusual changes in behavior.

Yet, having a deaf dog like Cole doesn’t hinder the bond between pet and owner. As Hannah and his students express, “deaf dogs don’t hear with their ears but with their hearts,” allowing for a unique form of communication that goes beyond words.

The Veterinary Emergency Group suggests using hand signals, being mindful of their surroundings, and keeping a watchful eye on them to care for a deaf pup.

Cole’s video has quickly gone viral, amassing over 6.2 million views and 960,400 likes on TikTok.

One TikTok user, Bri | lifestyle, remarked, “The amount of trust he must have with you guys.”

Nacho Lozoya humorously commented, “He thinks he’s being worshiped by the tiny hoomans.”

MizRizzle added, “It’s the happy baby sleep position for me with those precious teefs! Lord may I be this at peace and unbothered in the face of chaos!! I strive to be like Cole.”
