Sofie’s journey began in Sydney, Australia, where she first dipped her toes into the world of dumpster diving. Initially skeptical, she was inspired by her sister’s discovery of edible treasures in supermarket dumpsters.

“My sister sent me a photo of some hidden treasures she’d found dumpster diving. I knew about it, but I’d never seen it as an option to put food on the table,” Sofie shared.

Accompanied by a friend, Sofie explored local supermarket bins and was amazed at what she found. The abundance of fresh produce and packaged goods convinced her that she no longer needed to shop for food.

“What I found was insane. It was filled with food—some of it had expired, but a lot hadn’t,” she explained.

This newfound way of sourcing food was not only cost-effective but also thrilling, akin to a treasure hunt. Sofie recounted, “There would literally be two dumpsters in the back of a supermarket filled with packaged food, like whole chickens, frozen pizzas, and drinks.”

When Sofie returned to Denmark in 2022, she continued her dumpster diving practice. Over the years, she has spent only about $100 annually on non-food essentials like toilet paper and toothpaste.

This savvy approach has saved Sofie thousands of dollars, allowing her to travel extensively. “The money I have saved allows me the freedom to travel. I spent a lot of my money on visiting friends around the world,” she said.

Sofie’s travels have taken her to Kenya, Argentina, Italy, Spain, and Dubai, all while working just three days a week. “Dumpster diving allows me the freedom to spend more on the things I love,” she noted.

Her passion for this lifestyle has even inspired her family to join in, turning dumpster diving into a family affair. Despite initial skepticism from friends and colleagues, Sofie’s Instagram photos and videos have left them in awe.

Sofie’s mission has evolved beyond personal benefit to raising awareness about food waste. “I want to create awareness about food waste, but also about how we view food and how it can still be good even though the date has expired or the vegetable has a bump on it,” she expressed.
