A heart-warming video documents the touching response of a dog named McCoy when he encounters the ashes and collar of his late sibling. The clip was posted under the TikTok username trinatrainwreck and shows the poignant moment between McCoy and his late brother.

The video, shot in Currie, Minnesota, captures McCoy’s tail wagging as he takes in the scent of his brother’s ashes and collar. The caption attached to the viral clip reads, “We put our pup down 2 weeks ago. Today, we finally brought him home to his brother again.”

Trina, McCoy’s owner, discusses her relationship with the nine-year-old dog, who she considers her “soul dog.” She reveals how McCoy helped her navigate some of the most challenging times in her life.

“McCoy entered my life a few weeks after my boyfriend died in a suspicious drowning incident in 2014. After such a loss, even simple tasks became a struggle, but McCoy changed that. He became the reason I had to get out of bed every morning. Nine years later, the same is true, especially after we lost McCoy’s best friend, Olie.”

Olie was brought into the family by Trina’s boyfriend Adam in 2017 when he was still in college. A strong bond quickly formed between McCoy and Olie, and they became inseparable, their life filled with hunting, fishing, and cross-country adventures.

“Both dogs loved doing everything together, from hunting to fishing and most of all, exploring the countryside together. I always prayed that McCoy would live long enough to see me start my family, and he did. Tragically, Olie passed away not long after everything fell into place.”

Olie’s untimely passing was due to Lyme Nephritis, a rare complication from Lyme disease which resulted in kidney failure. Lyme disease, which can affect both humans and animals, is transmitted through tick bites, but only a minority of ticks carry the disease.

Trina shared the sad details of Olie’s last days. “Our vet, with 20 years of experience, had never seen or treated a single case of Lyme Nephritis. Olie was the exception. We thought he wouldn’t live past a week, then a month, then more. After 6 months, Olie finally succumbed to Lyme Nephritis, surrounded by his family and best friend, McCoy.”

After Olie’s death, McCoy had difficulty adjusting to the loss. He would search for Olie throughout their house. Trina and Adam decided to bring Olie’s ashes home, providing McCoy a chance to understand and grieve.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in this poignant story. A 12-week old golden retriever puppy named Patrick joined the family, bringing joy and helping them navigate through the loss. “He’s helped us through the loss of our soul pup. Yet another ‘grief pup.’ Ah, the circle of life.”
