The internet often serves as a source of amusement, and this time, the cause of mirth is Alfie, a golden retriever with vegetarian owners. A video showcasing Alfie’s intense interest in a barbecue has sent social media users into fits of laughter.

In the video shared on TikTok under the username “alfie.the.smiling.goldie,” Alfie can be seen sitting by the grill, engrossed in the cooking meat, something his owners don’t partake in. The entertaining video came with a humorous caption, “POV: your parents are veggies and you’ve finally been invited to a real BBQ.”

The video was widely enjoyed, but some viewers voiced concerns about Alfie not getting to taste the meat. His owners promptly assured everyone that Alfie indeed had some of the BBQ meat. They further clarified that despite their vegetarian preferences, Alfie’s diet includes raw meat.

However, addressing concerns about dogs’ dietary requirements, the American Kennel Club (AKC) explains, “dogs are not obligate (or true) carnivores and can thrive on a meatless diet as long as it is properly balanced.”

“At the same time,” the AKC notes, “like people who follow vegetarian diets, dogs can suffer protein or vitamin deficiency if their solely vegetarian diets are not appropriately supplemented.”

AKC advises feeding dogs with food specifically formulated for them, which contains all the essential nutrients to keep them healthy. If home-cooked food for your dog is preferred, it is suggested to consult with your vet to ensure the meal includes all the necessary nutrients.
