A golden retriever has taken TikTok by storm with a soulful performance that has left viewers both amused and empathetic.

Shared by @teddyware.thegolden, the video has garnered over 311,000 views since its release on August 31.

Captured by a pet camera, the clip shows the dog howling along to Eric Carmen’s classic ballad “All By Myself” after being left alone at home.

The video opens with an overlay text that reads:
“Mom and dad went bye bye and didn’t take me…so I sing my sorrows away.”

This display of canine emotion is not entirely surprising.

A May 2013 study published in PLOS One highlighted the unique bond between dogs and their owners, noting that it “bears a remarkable resemblance to an infant attachment bond.”

“Dogs are dependent on human care and their behavior seems specifically geared to engage their owners’ care-giving system,” the study explained.

Veterinarian Tiffany Tupler, in a May 2023 PetMD article, mentioned that dogs howl for various reasons, including expressing emotions like excitement, anxiety, or distress.

In some cases, howling is a learned behavior to attract attention.

Dogs use different sounds, such as howling, barking, and whining, to communicate their needs.

For instance, howling can indicate loneliness or alert others to environmental changes.

Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist and the American Kennel Club’s family dog director, explained in March 2022 that howling is
“a form of communication for dogs that is hard-wired.”

A VCA Animal Hospitals spokesperson added in March 2022:
“Like many canine behaviors, howling has ancestral roots. In the wild, safety-conscious wolves in the woods bellowed to announce their location to other members of their pack family.”
